Health and wellness

A holiday in Suvignano can be one of health and wellness thanks to the great many spas that the area has to offer. In the lap of luxury or in touch with nature, there’s a spa here for everyone.

Rapolano Terme is a spa town about 40 km (24 mi, roughly 38 minutes by car) from Suvignano, where you will find two spas: Terme San Giovanni, nestled in the Siena hills; and Terme Antica Querciolaia, closer to the town centre.

Terme di San Giovanni, a luxurious spa with pools, is set in a beautiful, 50-acre park. The waters, which spring from the source here at a temperature of 39°C (102°F), are rich in sulphur and calcium bicarbonate. The temperature and minerals give these waters healing properties that are particularly indicated for treating skin, joint and respiratory issues and which have been officially recognised by Italy’s Ministry of Health.

Terme Antica Querciolaia is in the centre of town and dates back to the late 19th century. This spa is particularly recommended for balneotherapy and for respiratory issues. Mud baths, baths in hot, warm and cold spring water, and inhaler or nebulizer treatments are available. At over 43,000 sq m (11 acres), the spa offers 6 outdoor pools and 2 indoor pools, as well as a hydromassage with spring water and 2 Kneipp pools.

Bagno Vignoni is a unique sort of town. It has a hot-water pool right in the central square dating back to the Renaissance, built right above the original source of the spring water used by the Ancient Romans. The town is 35 km (22 mi, about 40 minutes by car) from Suvignano.

The water at the source has a temperature of 49°C (120°F), so it is particularly indicated for muscle relaxation. Being rich in calcium, iron carbonates, sodium sulphates, magnesium and other minerals, it is also indicated for treatment of skeletal issues and for delicately soothing the skin and improving skin tone. From the source at the vast pool in the square, the water flows in the direction of calcareous rock that forms the Parco dei Mulini and then down towards the river, as it splits off into streams to form beautiful waterfalls and concretions. The wall here also contains four medieval mills carved into the rock in a feat of highly complex hydraulic engineering that is truly one of a kind. The Bagno Vignoni mills were created in the 12th century and remained operational up to the mid-1950s.

Bathing in the pool in the town square is no longer allowed, so you will need to go to one of the area’s spas, where you will be able to enjoy mud baths, hydromassage therapy, inhaler and nebulizer therapy, and other spa treatments.

Posta Marcucci dates back to the 1800s, when it began as a grocer’s and post office. The two pools were built in the 1970s to take advantage of the spring water that bubbles up here at a temperature of 49°C (120°F). Each has a different water temperature, and both are surrounded by a tree-lined garden.

In Petriolo, in the Ombrone Valley, you will find Terme di Petriolo at 27 km (17 mi, about 32 minutes by car) from Suvignano. Here, you can choose between the Terme di Petriolo spa in Monticiano and the Bagni di Petriolo natural hot springs along the river. The earthy, alkaline waters of Petriolo contain sulphates, bicarbonates, and other minerals and bubble up from a single source at a temperature of 43°C (109°F).

The natural pools of Bagni di Petriolo are found along the banks of the river, where the hot spring water mixes with the colder water of the river. They are always open and free of charge.
